See The Light 2009 - Energy Effiicient Buildings, How Low Can We Go? - 4-5 February 2009

Sustainable Energy Ireland in association with the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland are presenting See the Light 2009 - Energy Efficient Buildings How Low Can We Go workshop and conference.

This event takes place at The Ardilaun Hotel, Galway with a Passive House Planning Package Workshop on Wednesday 4th February followed by a one day conference and study tour on Thursday 5th February.

Wednesday 4th February, Passive House Planning Package (PHPP 2007) Workshop

In response to demand from professionals involved in the design of passive houses we will be presenting a one-day Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) workshop. The PHPP package is a clearly structured design software package developed by the world renowned Passivhaus Institut that can be used by architects and designers etc. Based on a series of extensive and interlinked data sheets the PHPP includes tools for:

  • Calculating the U-values of components with high thermal insulation
  • Calculating energy balances
  • Designing comfort ventilation
  • Calculating the heat load (including Irish climatic data)
  • Summer comfort calculations
  • Many other useful tools for reliable design of passive houses

The workshop (limited to just 35 participants) is very much a practical session with Wolfgang Hasper (Passivhaus Institut) assisted by Franz Freundorfer (PHC Passivehaus Consulting) providing a day long interactive workshop and demonstration of the PHPP 2007 including verification of an Irish timber frame passive house.

Thursday 5th February, See the Light – Conference and Study Tour

Today, a small revolution is building up in the design and construction of houses. The passive house concept is capturing the imagination of the Irish public and a few visionary entrepreneurs have taken the lead in making it happen.  Sustainable Energy Ireland’s Renewable Energy Information Office (REIO), with its mission to promote innovation in the field of sustainable energy, is at the forefront of a movement that has brought about a fundamental rethink in the way we design, construct and operate buildings.

The conference will be dedicated to low energy and the Passive House Standard, with leading Irish and European experts including Wolfgang Hasper from the Passive House Institute sharing their expertise and experience. Delegates will be offered a rare and in-depth understanding of the key principles and techniques in developing the ultimate low energy building and learn how renewable energy can be used cost effectively to provide healthy and ecological buildings here in Ireland.  Other highlights of the conference include the launch of the second set of SEI passive house guidelines ‘Guidelines for Upgrading Existing Dwellings in Ireland to the Passive House Standard’ with all delegates receiving a copy of the guidelines.  The conference concludes with an optional study tour to a local timber frame passive house.
